Gloria (Anne Hathaway) is a writer who is out of work and out of control. Her boyfriend kicks her out of his apartment. With nowhere to go, she returns to her childhood home. There she meets old friends and makes new friends.
Surprisingly, about this time, a malicious creature appears out of nowhere to squash the soul out of Seoul, South Korea. It does not take Gloria long to realize that this phenomenon has something to do with her. And we learn along with her the nature of the connection and work through what it means.
In most sci-fi movies, there is a surface story and often a subconscious or hidden principle that tries to be conveyed in everyday language.
When I saw the description mentioning Seoul, South Korea, I thought, oh no, it’s going to be one of those dubbed movies or a film where you have to read subtitles the entire time. Then I saw Anne Hathaway’s name and hoped the movie was in English. When the film started, it was in Korean, and there were subtitles that you had to read.
It turns out that this is not a standard light science fiction movie with an underlying principle. It is the principle underlying light science fiction. We find that the creatures are avatars for and in her childhood boyfriend to help work out an initial problem that they have.
The question is, will they get their problems solved, and how many people will die in the process?
Don’t expect anything lighthearted or too superficial.
