My grandmother told me, "It was after the stock market crash of 1929. Our country experienced the Great Depression in the 1930s but somehow this did not matter to Papa. With his big hands, he could hold the most fragile of all beings-the Monarch butterfly on his finger, which seemed unlikely with him working as a laborer at Sparrows Head Point Steel Plant but Papa, like the Monarch butterfly, brought his family to Sparrows Head Point, Maryland to start fresh with a place to call home. Laborer meant that he used a pick and a shovel all day and all night". My Great Grandfather's grandparents were slaves. While growing up, my great grandfather had to depend on himself to keep himself and his family out of poverty. He took a job as a laborer at the Bethlehem Steel plant in Sparrows Head, Maryland, where he was making twice what he would make in other jobs as a black man ( which was still not enough to live on). I wanted to write about how my grandmother and her sister kept the family happy in a town that was highly racially divided.
