An old sawmill burns down in the early morning in a Colorado town, someone is found dead in the new mill shortly after it is completed and Jack comes in from New Jersey to spend the summer working in the new mill. The mill is owned by his father's best friend and Jack, as are others, is suspicious of the fire that destroyed the original mill and what has happened to the new mill since. He blends into this Colorado town and starts snooping with the support of the local veterans. It is the summer of 1973.
