After studying social work at an Oxford college in England, Angela Thompson Smith, (then Angela Roberts, R.N.) signed a two-year contract with Voluntary Service Overseas to work at a Colombian orphanage as a nurse-social worker. The orphanage, located in the Andes foothills close to the ranching town of Villavicencio, provided adventures and challenges beyond any she had previously experienced. Taken from her nursery journals and letters home, Angela recounts how she regained her purpose in life following an abusive marriage and a sidetracked professional career. Her journeys took her to Bogota and out into the Andes Mountains, risking attacks by guerillas, as she searched for birth certificates for the orphans. It also tells the stories of over fifty Colombian orphans, the real heroes of this account, as they overcame abandonment and severe deprivation.
