Great dictionary

This is a great dictionary. It's a two way dictionary between English and German. It has over 208,000 entries and translations and a section covering basic grammatical principles. This is what I was looking for having in a single volume. I looked at other dictionaries and they did not include any grammar at all. It is nice to have basic paradigms and summaries for a quick reference without having to go to a separate book. Also, I liked the fact that it included entries that were not in other dictionaries. I did a comparison of random terms across three or four major dictionaries and this one came out on top. It also had the most detail for the entries I happened to look up. Someone suggested that I get a Langenscheidt, that it's a must, but it too fell short against this one. I have other dictionaries besides German-English from the Collins series and I really like them. I highly recommend this product.

Used this book all of the time in my German classes! Wish I had had this sooner, would have made everything a lot simpler. Its easy to use, easy to understand, and great when you need to find something quick. This should be a book every college student, studying German, should be required to have.

A useful book, although a little date

When this book was first published in 1980, the producers wanted it to be 'the most helpful one-volume dictionary for students, linguists, and all translation needs'. Twenty-two years later, I would dare to suggest that if this aim has not been met, then this dictionary has not fallen far short. There are over 200,000 words and phrases in both English and German. All words are defined in context (this is especially important for the novice student) and the clear abbreviations make the dictionary easy to use. Moreover, there is also a four-page guide in English and German on how to use this dictionary to assit the user further.On account of its age, this dictionary is inevitably a little dated, but it is still a very useful linguistic tool for students of German. I heartily recommend it.

A German Teacher's Two Cents: The Best on the Market

I have taught German for ten years, and I have done freelance translations with German for fifteen. This dictionary remains my favorite German dictionary. It is complete, contains loads of idiomatic expressions, it's easy to read, it's vocabulary is up to date (including lots of software and computer terminology). I recommend this dictionary whole-heartedly. Another good choice is the Langenscheidt--but Langenscheidt is sometimes too British, so the Collins is the best option for any American.

understandable, very good translations, gives good concepts

One of the best bilingual engl/ger. dictonaries, the way the entries are desigened gives you very fast a good picture of the concept of the word, a smooth concept. Other engl/ger dictionaries as for eg. Langenscheidt are very often disruppting the way to get the english sense and meaning by the more typical german way of thinking ("one word for every detail") and because of unsufficient describing definitions. Anyhow, ideal state for defining words, by explaining them, not by giving "substitute words" is seen in den Websters englisch- englisch editions. The Collins comes this state pretty close an is one which I can really recommend! thky terrellWhat I would love in addition?1. I want that derivations are added, which would give an more final concept and thorough understandig! 2. AND I WANT A CD OF THIS DICTIONARY, please!
