The problem is the battle we persist in having with thoughts that bedevil us. To overcome the battle, we must learn to turn away from them, rather than battling with them. When you refuse to play the game, you are free of it, thereby opening the way to Illumination, a momentary insight into our real nature. A love letter, so to speak, from the Divine spark within, promising that all is well. However, these illuminations come and go. What we are really seeking is Enlightenment, that state of being which is beyond waking, sleeping, and dreaming. When this state is achieved, one is said to have become liberated while still alive. Sounds good, but what does it mean? How is this state achieved?It means we must die to who we think we are in order to become that which we already are. In dying daily, we strip away layer after layer of our persona, like an onion, until nothing is left. And, in that nothingness, we discover who we are. Whereas before, we thought we were the wave, now we realize we are the ocean. Dying daily will become the most difficult, the most joyous, and the most painful of experiences in this journey within, this pursuit of liberation.Our personality, however, remains at our disposal, which is essential for communication with others, but now we control it - it no longer controls us. The ego, which in a certain sense is fear, has dissolved and is no more.Now comes the journey we must take within to achieve the above. Holy Scripture provides a clue which we have stumbled over and managed to ignore with great success, i.e. closer than breathing; nearer than hands and feet, which means the Divine spark we are seeking lies within our own consciousness awaiting recognition but hidden behind our persona.
