Five very different women form an unlikely friendship after a chance meeting at Coffee Lab, a Hampstead coffee shop.

Over the next eight weeks Astrid, Gillian, Stephanie, Helen and Tracy meet weekly and share insights into their innermost thoughts and feelings. As the story unfolds, it becomes apparent that often people's lives aren't what they seem on the outside.

Every chapter is told from the perspective of one of the main characters and what she thinks of herself and her life, as compared to the lives of the other four women, and also what she thinks the other four women must think of her and her life. As is often the case, it becomes clear that what they think of themselves and what they think other people must think of them, is not always accurate.
