The coconut substrate industry in Sri Lanka plays a vital role in generating foreign exchange earnings and employment opportunities, but there is a significant gap between the demand and supply of these products in the global market. This book aims to identify the barriers to production improvement and develop strategies to overcome them. The scarcity of raw materials is mainly caused by low coconut production and inefficient husk collection mechanisms. While the industry has a strong market share for coco substrate products globally, its labor-intensive nature is considered a weakness. The increasing global demand for washed and buffered products presents a great opportunity, but the presence of low-quality products poses a threat to the reputation of high-quality Sri Lankan coco substrate products.
