Excellent Bible Translation For Daily Devotional Reading
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 23 years ago
This translation of the Bible is EXCELLENT for daily devotional reading. For in depth Bible Study, this Bible can certainly be used. But it may be helpful to have another translation such as the NASB or ESV by your side. The reason I am giving this Bible 5 stars is because I think that it does a great job in reaching its goals:1. To find equivalent English ways of expressing the meaning of the original text.2. To make the Bible text readable.3. To choose the natural equivalent that most closely reflects the style of the original Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek text.Problems exist at each end of the spectrum when determining whether to perform a word-for-word or thought-for-thought translation. Another reviewer illustrated possible problems that thought-for-thought translations might have. However, he failed to represent problems encountered in word-for-word translations that he is proposing. Form-equivalent or word-for-word translations can of result in awkward, misleading, incomprehensible, or even amusing sentences. For example, a form-equivalent translation of 1 Samuel 9:2 could read:"From his shoulders upward Saul was taller than any of the people".In English, this could imply that Saul had a misshapen head and neck. Translations using this theory have made the Bible more difficult to read and understand in English than it was in the original languages. This is where God's Word Bible succeeds in an amazing way. The translators have somehow managed to translate the text into smooth reading English while maintaining accuracy conveying the meaning of the original text.If you're looking for a Bible translation that reads smoothly like a book, yet still verse-by-verse accurately portrays the Word Of God, this is the Bible for you....the God's Word translation. If you're looking for a less readable translation, that may be more accurate word-for-word (yet less understandable to most readers), pick up a copy of a NASB or ESV translation of the Bible. If you're looking for the best combination of Bible translations for daily devotional reading and in depth Bible word studies, why not pick up a copy of both the God's Word translation AND the English Standard Version Bibles? It's well worth the investment. In summary, your best bet is to discuss with your local church minister or priest what the best Bible is for you, given your stage in your Christian life, and for what purpose you intend the Bible to serve (daily devotionals, word studies, etc.). Perhaps the best advice is that any Bible that accurately portrays the Christian faith (look to ministers and elders for advice about this) and that keeps you reading it on a daily basis, is worth your investment.(Note some of the above phrasing is taken directly from the Preface to this Bible. It's a great place to start reading if you are interested in this version).
