This handbook provides guidance for NPS managers, partners, and other practitioners in exploring andimplementing climate change adaptation in coastal settings, including Great Lakes areas but excluding nearshore andopen-ocean issues such as oceanographic changes to marineecosystems, and impacts to threatened and endangeredspecies habitats such as offshore shoals, and fisheries.Climate change adaptation is a broad, interdisciplinary, and rapidly developing field. This handbook is not acomprehensive manual with a single decision framework ora complete listing of the best tools for a particular resourceor asset. Instead, it summarizes key approaches currentlyin practice or considered for climate change adaptation incoastal areas to guide adaptation planning in coastal parks.The level of detail varies by topic depending on the stateof research and practice in that field. Some topics are wellresearched in coastal areas, while others are emerging issuesfor which there may be no specific adaptation strategiesto recommend or results available.
