Because Lenski visited actual coal camp families and listened to their stories as she stayed with them, this book rings with truth and authenticity. I read this aloud to our kids and we all enjoyed (and were worried at the more serious parts) the characters dealing with buying groceries on store credit, injuries in the mine, fierce loyalty and pride, and family togetherness.
