COACH MARY'S GUIDELINES
S.L.I.C.E. 'N' D.I.C.E VOLLEYBALL
To be a good athlete you must demonstrate Sportsmanship, Leadership & Loyalty, use your Instincts, make good Choices, and Endure.
The only way to Dominate & influence is by Communication & Expression.
SLICE 'N' DICE is an acronym for:
Sportsmanship - play fair, be courteous, show team spirit, show grace in losing, appreciate your opponent's skills. Recognize the skills you need to improve on.
Leadership - A leader demonstrates leadership by influencing his/her team to establish and accomplish goals. As a team, you encourage each other.
Instinct - Powerful motivation or impulse to use learned skills naturally.
Choices - Take care in choosing. Your choices have power. Make good choices.
Endurance - The act, quality, and power of withstanding and conquering hardship.
Dominate - Control or rule by superior authority or power.
Influence - Power to sway or affect based on superior ability.
Communicate - To convey information about. Reveal the situation clearly.
Express - To manifest or communicate, as by a gesture. Demonstrated through skill, attitude, and ability. Show 'em what's up.
Each of the above are important characteristics of a good volleyball player.
Team mentality is of utmost importance. It is the cornerstone of a good team. This is where loyalty and leadership come in. Each member works toward a common team goal.
Positive attitude is essential. Take each play one play at a time. Show good sportsmanship and leadership whether you win or lose. Encourage each other. Have Fun
Play your position. Know your job and do it to the best of your ability. Communicate with your team mates. You have to talk to each other as well as anticipate your team mates' next moves. Use your instincts and back each other up.
Endurance and physical conditioning are a must for volleyball. Visualization is also an important tool. Visualize yourself performing each skill properly and with mastery. Exercising your mind is just as essential as physical conditioning.
Visualization techniques improve concentration, confidence and ability. The more you pay attention to your team, each situation, your own biofeedback - what your body tells you- the better player you will be.
Practice, Practice, Practice. Eat, sleep and dream volleyball. Think, act and learn as much about it as you can. Know the techniques, the history, the champions, the skills, the training, and the mental conditioning. Apply yourself and you will succeed
