Book Overview

When the first edition of this book was published in 2001, CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) was largely viewed as a standard that was on the horizon. In the past two years, CMMI has --... This description may be from another edition of this product.

SCAMPI Distilled is right on!

This book was purchased after I saw a friend's copy; we were preparing for a CMMI (V1.1) SCAMPI Appraisal at my company and I found the "Practice Implementation Descriptions" (Appendix B) to be very helpful. Since that time I've loaned it to co-workers to use during their appraisal preparations and have used it myself for other, CMMI (v1.2) appraisals. Inquiring minds want to know: When/if a new version will be written for CMMI-DEV v1.2 (or v1.3) and/or for CMMI-SVC v1.2? We are anxiously awaiting the next one - whatever version it happens to be!!

Excellent read for an overview of ÇMMI.

This book is easy to read and well organized and provides a great overview of CMMI. A good choice for those wanting to acquire a working knowledge in a short period of time.

Best CMMI book

This is the best book I have found todate on CMMI. The book covers both models and goes into some history of the whole process improvement process. If you know CMM and want to move to CMMI or if you do not know anything about CMM, this book is a great starter. I have purchased several copies for my company and everyone that I have given a copy to loves the book.

Great book, clear and concise

The CMMI project is an exciting one that will pay enormous dividends once fully implemented in 2003. This book has been especially helpful in giving a clear, fresh understanding of the CMMI Project, its goals, architecture, and models. Especially valuable are the new sets of tools developed by the CMMI project along with the sections on how to use those tools to the best advantage. Here is where the book really shines: sound, clear advice based on the experience of organizations and software engineering professionals, passed on to the reader in readable language. The authors distill all this into a manageable 335 pages, filled with pithy examples, engineering humor, even poetry. Most importantly, it is as jargon-free as a book of its nature can be, written in clear, direct prose that will be appreciated by those who are trying to wrap their hands around the evolving CMMI enterprise. Highly recommended. The kind of book even your boss can read and understand.

Succinct description of the CMMI's current state

This book will give you a jump on the integrated capability maturity model (CMMI) that is expected to be fully implemented in the Fall of 2003. This integrated model is based on the current CMM versions for software, integrated product development and systems engineering.Because the CMMI is still evolving there will be inevitable changes between information and details in this book and the final version. This book's organization and the clear descriptions of the existing source models from which the CMMI is derived will arm you with enough information to either plan a transition to the CMMI or evaluate the model as an implementation goal. The book starts with the rationale for the CMMI and a good description of how the source models integrate. This is followed by five chapters that dissect the CMMI. Areas covered include conceptual, structural and process area points of view. I especially liked Chapter 5, CMMI Representations, because it gives the clearest description of staged and continuous models. This is augmented in Chapter 9 by an excellent comparison of these two models, which discusses reasons for liking each model and for choosing one representation model over the other. There is also important material on assessments and how the CMMI is evolving that make this book important. If your company is currently using the CMM or considering it this book distills a great deal of SEI documentation into 335 pages and does a good job of describing the CMMI and summarizing the issues. While you will still have to keep up with the CMMI as it evolves, this book will get you quickly up to speed.
