In early 1948 I walked into the government presentation room at Suitland, Maryland, with my research mentor boss. I was not a policy guy and wondered why I had been included in a navy-sponsored program on nuclear fallout safety in Tennessee. At the meeting, I recognized a girl from a world-champion fast-pitch softball team who was doing graduate work in the field. The navy needed this study done by a non-military source to control news coverage of the risks that could polarize the public with panic. The navy was pleased with our history of successful surplus contracting in Italy, and we were greedy enough to persistently go after the study. Our guys eventually got awarded that contract in Hillbilly Appalachia. We hired some of the lady ball players. In this book, you'll find a lot of situational location humor fueled with unique character types.
