Clouds of Witness

"Clouds of Witness" is a classic Golden Age mystery featuring the sophisticated amateur sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey. When his own brother, the Duke of Denver, is accused of murdering their sister's fianc at a shooting lodge in Yorkshire, Lord Peter must rush back from abroad to lead a high-stakes investigation. As the Duke faces a trial by his peers in the House of Lords, Wimsey navigates a labyrinth of family secrets, suspicious alibis, and elusive evidence to uncover the truth.

Dorothy L. Sayers crafts a compelling narrative that blends meticulous detective work with a sharp portrayal of the British aristocracy. This celebrated work is noted for its wit, intricate plotting, and atmospheric setting. From the fog-drenched moors to the solemn halls of Parliament, the story challenges the reader to solve a puzzle where loyalty and justice are at odds. A cornerstone of detective fiction, "Clouds of Witness" remains a testament to the enduring appeal of the gentleman detective and the mastery of 1920s British crime writing.

More than just a mystery, this is England.

Dorothy L. Sayers writes many non-fiction books; however, among her best works of fiction is the Lord Peter Wimsey series. I came to this series sort of through the back door. My first taste was the BBC productions with Petherbridge as Lord Peter, which can now be found on DVD. So, I read all of Dorothy’s books containing the relationship of Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane. Now it is time to go through the whole series. In the second of eleven Lord Peter books, Lord Peter returns from Corsica. To find his older brother, the Duke of Denver was practically accused of murder. What is worse is that his brother is not talking. So, it is up to Peter to find out what happened and clear his brother of the accusation. In the process, he puts his foot in it and practically gets all his relatives and friends accused. As with all Sayers’ stories, nothing is simple; there are overlapping plots and foolish deeds, as if Peter cannot figure them out. On the side, we learn a little about English society and ballistics.
