Clone Rebel
With the same DNA, like twins, clones are naturally in tune with each other. This natural resonance, amplified by hundreds or thousands, is enhanced with brainwave headbands, creating artificial telepathy with a clan. This advantage enables clones to dominate politics, economics, and education. Individual "singletons" or "stupe indies" have become second-class citizens, slowly being exterminated through forced sterilization.
Operating from an estate outside Washington, DC, Nujent is the most powerful female clan-ruthless and hated. However, Chelsea (XII-17), age 18, is neither arrogant nor cruel.
Chelsea crews Nujent's takeover of the asteroid Vesta, which is the gateway to the whole outer system. There's been a mining station on the asteroid, run by Karadine, who has an eighteen-year-old son, Thov. (Singletons invent unique names to emphasize their individuality.) Chelsea and Thov are attracted to each other before returning to Earth.
Earthside, Karadine's husband and Thov's father, Danil, joins them. Danil is a member of the anti-clone underground and was a "lab rat" in a Nujent prison.
Thov and Chelsea run into each other at the university. He tells her about growing up on Vesta, and she shares aspects of her life as a clone. Danil hates Nujent and tries to convince Thov to escape from "the viper's pit". Chelsea's clan also forbids their relationship and punishes her severely.
Plus, Chelsea's fam is scheduled for implantation of genetically engineered Nujent ova. Meanwhile, Thov has been scheduled for mandatory "vasovalves." But Chelsea wants her baby to be Thov's-not some mutant Nujent-and they make love. However, Nujent destroys Thov's embryo and implants its own zygote.
Meanwhile, Danil reveals to Thov that the experiments in Nujent's prison had to do with mind control. Nujent discovers this leak, captures Danil, and takes him to its HQ in the Australian outback for interrogation and disposal.
Nujent also orders Thov's arrest, but he and Chelsea run away and hide out. Nujent launches amplified psychic attacks against Chelsea, the "clone rebel."
Thov and Chelsea must survive to try to help Karadine rescue Danil in Australia. And is their love strong enough to thwart Nujent's attempt at mass mind control?
