It has been a long time since I read the book at the age of 16. I loved the little village of Beaujaulaise (?) and its residents. The man who hatched eggs and the padres who confessed their sins with their housekeepers by telegraph, the aristocrat, the communist, the merchant and his lovely wife whose pink mouth enchanted many a cuatomer. It had the authentic flavour of France, a country I have never seen. One may question why I have not rated it a five stars book, but the reason is that though a book I remember and would like to buy again (my two copies were borrowed and never returned, it does not make grade as great literature, its like a lovable woman, but not the perfect woman.
