Clive James AO CBE FRSL, born on 7th October 1939, Kogarah, New South Wales, Australia, was a critic, broadcaster, author, essayist, and poet who lived and worked in the UK from 1961 until his death during 2019. James began his career specialising in literary criticism before becoming TV critic for The Observer in 1972, where he made his name with his wry, deadpan humour, while developing an independent reputation as a poet and satirist. He had British mainstream success, first as a writer for TV then as the lead presenter of his own programs, including '...on Television'.
