little known author but amazing story

This was one of my favourite books I read as a kid. The plot's fairly straightforward but it's how the author depicted the responses of the main characters, who are children, that draws you into the story. Reading this book all those years ago as a sympathetic peer, I couldn't help but marvel at their resourcefulness and sibling cooperation, at the same time being transported to the great expanse of nothing in the middle of our country that all good little urban Australians are made aware of at some point in their primary education and surprisingly finding it such a fascinating place.
