Cleopatra: The Tomb They Never Found
More than two thousand years after her death, Cleopatra's lost tomb has still never been found.
The final resting place of Cleopatra VII remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of ancient Egypt. Ancient writers claimed that Cleopatra and Mark Antony were buried together, yet no confirmed tomb has ever been identified. Was the tomb of Cleopatra hidden in Alexandria, lost beneath the Mediterranean, or placed near the ancient temple complex of Taposiris Magna?
In CLEOPATRA: THE TOMB THEY NEVER FOUND, James P Patterson investigates the evidence behind one of history's most famous missing burial sites and reopens the mystery of Cleopatra's final days, death, and disappearance from the archaeological record.
This book examines the collapse of Ptolemaic Egypt, the death of Mark Antony, the Roman conquest of Alexandria, and the competing accounts of Cleopatra's suicide. It also follows the modern archaeological search across Alexandria, underwater ruins, and Taposiris Magna, where ongoing discoveries continue to fuel speculation about the location of the queen's burial.
Readers will explore Cleopatra's lost tomb, the death of Mark Antony and Cleopatra, the ancient accounts of Cleopatra's suicide, the monument Cleopatra may have prepared before her death, the submerged royal quarter of Alexandria, the archaeological search beneath the Mediterranean, Cleopatra's connection to Isis and Egyptian royal religion, and the evidence for and against the leading burial theories.
This is not a book that pretends the mystery has been solved. It is an investigation into what the ancient sources actually say, what Egyptian archaeology has uncovered, and why Cleopatra's burial place remains missing after more than two thousand years.
Cleopatra died in 30 BC. Her tomb existed. People once knew where it was. Today, the world is still searching.
