A solid, in-depth, introduction to classical music

The breadth and depth of classical music can be intimidating for the neophyte. The baroque, classical, and romantic periods combined with the huge numbers of composers and performers are an intimidating mount to climb. Mr. Sethna, through beautifully written prose, presents a series of important masterworks from each period, describes why each is important, how it fits into a larger picture, and provides a series of specific recommended CD purchases in a wide variety of price ranges. In sum, the perfect book for a newcomer to classical music, and an excellent reference for those more experienced.
