The spirit of the 19th century

This book is just a delightful pedagogy, and a voyage in what was probably the nicest in the spirit of music in the middle of the 19th century. However, let the author talk, and imagine you're told this not only by your singing teacher, but by any performing art teacher: "Keep on studying...my dear students (...) My wish for you is that you will feel the urge to excel, that you will be on guard against rivalry, and that very soon you will give me the great joy of applauding you".
