Concentrating on England in the 17th and early 18th centuries, the book shows that it was quite different and highly controversial discourses and practices that gave rise to the idea of a society divided into classes. In addition to the sorting techniques of Political Arithmetic, it is above all the mass media of 1700 (coffee house, club, newspaper, magazine) that can be understood as agencies of a classificatory redivision of the social.
