Claiming the Beatitudes: Nine Stories from a New Generation has solidified Rev. Anne Howard's place as a passionate, compassionate advocate for justice and peace. Rather than undertaking an exegesis of the Matthew 5 text, Rev. Howard shows how the Beatitudes have been exegeted in the lives of nine seminary and divinity school students, students who are "Putting the 'Be' in the Beatitudes." Read this book, and be hopeful that a radically better world is possible, a world grounded in the Beatitudes, a world grounded in God's beauty, truth, and goodness.

Think About the Future of Faith

I found 'Claiming the Beatitudes' inspiring. As I read of the next generation of Christians who find in their faith a living font for social action, I eagerly turned each page. (Who doesn't like reading about the future?) Not only do these stories inspire faith and generate new ideas for practical religion, but they also marshal a strong living argument against the pundits who foster culture wars or those who think that Christianity's best days are behind. I would recommend this book for church study groups or anyone interested in exploring real, lived faith and how it applies to our roles as citizens.
A Radical Vision

This wonderful book is especially good for our times because it is radical in its vision and has so many young voices. The writing is cogent and graceful. The Beatitudes will be new to you after reading it.

"Claiming the Beatitudes" is a wonderful weaving of voices from the emerging generation with insights from a seasoned progressive viewpoint. Thus, Anne Howard brings together two vital streams--Progressive and Emergent--of contemporary Christianity in an inviting narrative that many people should find both helpful and inspiring. It would be perfect as a Lenten study book in a church or great for a shared reading experience for a college fellowship. If you have ever wondered if it is possible to live the radical teachings of Jesus in this world, wonder no longer. The answer is "yes." Regular people can DO the Beatitudes in their everyday lives.
