Lost History

Strausburg masterfully weaves a tale of a city, New York, which was at times Lincoln's greatest ally, and at other his greatest enemy. You will learn things in this book that you were not taught in schools, such as the greatest mass lynching of blacks took place in NY, in opposition to the draft. You will learn other things about both the North and the South that you would never think were true. You will learn that one of America's greatest songs writers, Stephen Foster, died a drunkard, with pennies to his name. You will learn that the South’s theme song, "Dixie," was one of Lincoln's favorite songs. This book is a "must read" for anyone interested in the history of New York during that turbulent time.
