This is the only English language book that I have read that does justice to the mythical landscape of Montreal. Some of Mordecai Richler's early books come close, but in City of Forgetting Majzels conveys the banal mystery of the mountain, the river, the harbour. And what a cast: Clytaemenstra watching from the Lookout with Che Guevera, Paul de Chomedey and Le Corbusier down by the water, the tired and false streets, the garbage and city birds ... A book to revel and to dream in. A book that put me more physically present in Montreal than anything else I have read and a book that will make me try to read Tremblay in French (or Scotish).
