The catastrophe has struck the world, and to save people from having to suffer through this broken world, the city of Ember was created. Now the generator is about to give way, and due to the circumstances, the people of the city of Ember do not realize what this means. It is time for two teenagers to figure out the secret and save the city.
This movie was based on the book “The City of Ember” (2003), which is the first book in the Ember series by American writer Jean DuPrau, so naturally, many reviews will be skewed by people who first notice that the movie is not like the book.
But the movie is an attempt at a child’s adventure. It follows the standard formula set down or described by Joseph Campbell as the standard steps of coming-of-age and the hero’s journey.
In the end, it took what could’ve been told in 15 minutes and dragged it out to an hour and 35 minutes. If you use the fast-forward button occasionally, you will not lose any of the stories or miss anything of importance.
The only redeeming value is the fun in recognizing the old actors as they pop up on the screen. Martin Landau, Tim Robbins, Bill Murray, Toby Jones, and many others.
