City Girl, Country Boy

I really like the old, old Harlequin Romances, but sometimes I get a good Silhouette Romance. Most of the time I get mean, cold, abuisve alpha males, and this book is no exception. Although Garrett Dean falls in love with Crystal Gentry the moment he meets her, he fights the feeling almost through the whole story. Crystal was a sweet child. She found it easy to give her heart even as a small child to Hal Groman her lawyer, who from the moment he met her held a fatherly fondness for her at the age of eight. Now Crystal finds the money she thought would be hers after the death of her beloved Aunt Judith doesn't exist. Jerry Chessman, a fellow teacher, who was bilingual as she was, and the man she was engaged to, found out the women he had been fooling around with all the time he was engaged to Crystal was now carrying his child, he put an end to their engagement, letting Crystal know his being with another woman was all her fault, because she wouldn't have sex with him. Crystal wants to get out of Dallas, and the school she was going to be working in with Jerry. So this sweet lawyer(talk about fiction) helps her get a job as a teacher on Garrett's ranch teaching Mexican boys and girls to speak American English. At first Garrett doesn't want to give her the job, then he calls her and insists she take the job ASAP. That is if she wants to work for him. It's now long before she is on his ranch teaching, but she finds a young woman Gloria working there the daughter of Lupe, Garrett's housekeeper the sister of his late wife Maria hates her guts. Crystal is at a loss at to what she has done to deserve this mean young woman's wrath, and it isn't until again almost the end of the story that we are told why Gloria has issues with Crystal. But Garrett finally gives in to his feelings and stops treating Crystal badly. Although he doesn't always act mean, he so often does that I wondered why Crystal fell in love with him. But lets just go to the back of the book: 'Crystal Gentry wanted to leave Dallas forever. It had been the scene of too many unhappy memories. Orphaned, jilted and penniless, she was relieved when her family lawyer found her a job on the large Texas spread of Garrett Dean, the powerful oil magnate. Soon Crystal found herself drawn to her enigmatic boss. But Garrett seemed to be irrevocably married to a mysterious past...a past that he refused to share.'
