Outstanding Book!

This is an excellent non-fiction book. Very readable. Definitely one of the best and most thouroughly researched books on any subject I've read in the last ten years. Perhaps most shocking are the revelations about How American Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Ira Glasser has been up to his ears in a host of unsavory activities including pedophillia and took money from Phillip Morris and RJ Reynolds in exchange for having the ACLU do the cigarette manufacturers legal work and government lobbying. Glasser then lied about his unethical and illegal activities to both the public and the ACLU members he supposedly represents. How this man has avoided a lengthy prison term would make an excellent sequel to this book. I was also surprised to discover how intimately linked American history is with the history of tobacco production and cigarette manufacturing. This book reminded me of another all-time favorite pieces of non-fiction journalism, WORKING, by Studs Terkel. I eagerly await John Fash's next book.

This book is shocking!

I enjoyed reading this book very much. It is an outstanding piece of non-fiction journalism. I was perhaps most shocked to learn about ACLU director Ira Glasser's involvement in pedophillia, his role in undertaking work on behalf of Philip Morris & RJ Reynolds in exchange for huge cash "donations" and then lyning about it to the public and the ACLU members he supposedly represents. How Ira Glasser has avoided a lengthy prison sentence would make a great sequel to this book.I have never smoked but was fascinated by how intimately linked American history is with the history of tobacco production and cigarette manufacture. This book reminded me of one of my all-time favorite oral histories-WORKING by Studs Terkel. I am eagerly awaiting Fash's next book!

This book is shocking!

I enjoyed reading this book very much. It is an outstanding piece of nonfiction journalism. I was perhaps most surprised to read about the ACLU's role in undertaking legal work on behalf of Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds in exchange for substantial cash contributions which the companies then wrote off of their taxes. I was also sickened by ACLU director Ira Glasser's involvement in pedophillia, his dishonest role in accepting money from cigarette companies, doing work for-hire for them, and then lying about it to the public and the ACLU members he supposedly represents. How this man has avoided a lenghty prison sentence should be the subject of a sequel to this book. I have never smoked, but was fascinated to read about how intertwined American history is with the history of tobacco production and cigarette manufacturing. This book reminded me of one of my all-time favorite pieces of oral history-WORKING by Studs Terkel. I am anxiously awaiting Fash's next book.

A gripping as well as hilarious look at an evil industry.

The book documents the cigarettes' role in history, beginning with ritualistic human sacrifice ceremonies performed by proto/Mayas to the influence of cigarette industry contributions on American public health policy. Included are illuminating, sometimes hilarious, often tragic testimonials from present and former cigarette addicts. By relying on smokers' own words, Fahs avoids any posturing or preaching and cuts right to the heart of the nature of cigarette addiction. The revelations about the financial contributions Philip Morris has made to the ACLU are shocking and disturbing. Fahs presents a well-documented case demonstrating that the ACLU is a hired gun and is in part owned by both Philip Morris and R.J. Reynolds
