Cibou, by Susan Young di Biagi

From the dramatically beautiful cover, to the breathtaking story that unfolds between the covers, this book will be enjoyed over and over. It should become a classic, to be read by all who love Canada. This finely researched novel educates the reader; skilfully weaving historical events and personalities into the story of the fictional First Nations people of Cibou. The characters are vividly alive. It is very hard to believe that they are not all real and they live on in the imagination of the reader after the book is finished, which must certainly be the mark of a great book. There are many potential discussion points. The book brilliantly traces the relentless invasion of the French and English from the point of view of Mouse, the young mixed race girl who became the woman, Marie-Ange. It demonstrates the devastating impact of the Europeans on the First Nations people, as their way of life is slowly changed forever. In the character of the Chief, who wore rags so that his people would know that they would always be cared for, and in his quiet wisdom and humility, there are lessons on servant leadership. The way Susan Young di Biagi describes how Father Antione told the story of the Christian faith in a way that could be understood and related to by the people of Cibou, makes the reader feel as though she is hearing it for the first time too. The book is both a heart wrenching love story, and the story of the love of Father Antione Daniel for the people he was sent to live with, and eventually die for. The book is a treasure.
