Does God really speak in the middle of the night? Will I go to hell if I get mad at people who ring my doorbell and try to convert me on a Saturday morning? What is the meaning of suffering? Will God laugh if I fart in church? These questions have no answers, but that doesn't stop me from trying to answer them. Sometimes, I talk myself into trouble. If this were the Middle Ages, I might be burned for heresy because I imagined an alternate conversation between Mary and Joseph at the inn. I can't abide a literal interpretation of the Bible because Leviticus left me breathless and angry. There's slavery, OCD, and sanctioned revenge in it. I feel at odds with political Christianity but is my own faith righteous or self-righteous? Still, I persist in my search within the church despite my doubts. Even though I don't walk the beaten track of Christianity, I stay because I am surrounded by compassionate Christians, people whose message is love. Reaching for God brings peace. I know. I find it in the oddest places, even in the dryer when I'm looking for a matching sock.
