As Catholics, Christ's command to "preach the Gospel to all nations" is taken with the utmost seriousness. Yet, where does the Church fit within the spectrum of larger society? More specifically, in today's world, it is often asked how is the Church is to spread the Gospel message within the context of the religiously diverse and pluralistic societies that mark our times. These questions have been the cause of much debate within theologians for most of Christian history, and these debates have become more intense in light of the rise of modern secularism and the legal codification of the separation of Church and State. In this book, we will examine the development of the Church's view on the issue of Church-State relations, first by examining the history of the issue, then by examining major magisterial documents from the Church, starting with Pope Pius IX's 1864 syllabus of errors, and ending with contemporary magisterial documents from the past half-century.
