Charles Ellis Schumer was born on November 23, 1950, in Midwood, Brooklyn, to Selma (n e Rosen) and Abraham Schumer. His father operated an exterminating business, while his mother was a homemaker. The Schumer family is Jewish, and Charles is a second cousin, once removed, of comedian Amy Schumer. His ancestors hailed from Chortkiv, Galicia, in present-day western Ukraine.
Schumer excelled academically, attending Brooklyn public schools and graduating as valedictorian of James Madison High School in 1967. He scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT and even competed for his high school on the television quiz show It's Academic . Schumer then attended Harvard College, initially majoring in chemistry but switching to social studies after volunteering on Eugene McCarthy's presidential campaign in 1968. Graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1971, he went on to earn his Juris Doctor with honors from Harvard Law School in 1974. Although he passed the New York state bar in early 1975, Schumer opted for a career in politics rather than practicing law.
