Chromebooks are revolutionizing the way students and educators are using computers. Chromebooks provide students with a wide range of applications that operate the Chrome Operating System (OS) by Google. Once the device starts up, both teachers and students have access to wide array of services that can be accessed through the Chrome browser. It is within the browser that students can access applications and specialized extensions that add functionality to their work space. With Chrome (and the Chromebook) comes the promise of providing universal supports for all learners through a cloud based system that de-emphasizes the hardware and instead focuses on providing the student support anywhere learning happens. This paradigm shift has the potential to level the playing field and provide universal design for learning (UDL) supports across the curriculum. Gone are the days of students with special needs only having access to custom assistive technology supports on a single device. Now using the power of Chrome, these supports follow the student to any device, once they login. The new range of services that Chromebooks provide make true collaboration possible and alters the way we think about students working in groups or teachers providing students with feedback in real time.
