In 1979 Richard Roos, a Jesuit priest just five years ordained, undertook an arduous walking pilgrimage of the California missions, going by food from San Diego to Sonoma north of San Francisco. Not only did he make the journey entirely under his own power-- visiting each of the 21 Franciscan missions along the way-- he did it without money in his pocket. Each day he would beg food and lodging from the people he met, making himself dependent upon the generosity of strangers. This book is a journal of that trip. It is a remarkable combination of travelogue and spiritual pilgrimage, describing the inner journey of the pilgrim as well as the physical trip along the California coast. It brims with personal encounters and adventures. The modern day pilgrimage followed the path of Junipero Serra who 200 years earlier had walked the same terrain to establish mission stations which still witness to the religious heritage of California.
