In 1979 Richard Roos, a Jesuit priest just five years ordained, undertook an arduous walking pilgrimage of the California missions, going by food from San Diego to Sonoma north of San Francisco. Not only did he make the journey entirely under his own power-- visiting each of the 21 Franciscan missions along the way-- he did it without money in his pocket. Each day he would beg food and lodging from the people he met, making himself dependent upon the generosity of strangers.This book is a journal of that trip.
