Christo and Jeanne-Claude-isms

Bys: Christo and Jeanne-Claude

A collection of illuminating quotations from the artist team famous for creating monumental, site-specific works around the world

Christo and Jeanne-Claude-isms is a compelling collection of quotations from the world-renowned artists and collaborators Christo (1935-2020) and Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009). Celebrated for their monumental, temporary, and site-specific outdoor installations, such as the wrapping of the Reichstag in Berlin or the Pont Neuf in Paris, the duo challenged conventional ideas of permanence, ownership, and artistic intention, redefining the relationship between art, the environment, and public experience. They achieved a rare combination of critical praise and popular acclaim and today their work lives on in exhibits and books featuring photographs, preparatory drawings, and models of their projects.

The quotes in Christo and Jeanne-Claude-isms have been selected from an archive of unpublished material, as well as from the artists' public statements, interviews, and writings. Infused with their characteristic conviction, this collection offers a vivid window into the philosophy and creative vision of one of the most distinctive and important artistic partnerships."The process is part of the work, as much as a pregnancy is part of having a baby." (Jeanne-Claude)"Drawing is a path toward reality." (Christo)"To be a discoverer requires more than reading books--one has to feel the pulse of time." (Christo)"My whole life is to interrupt Christo, and I love it." (Jeanne-Claude)"Artist is not a profession. You don't work from 9 to 5. To be an artist, you're all the time an artist. All the time. There is no moment when you're not an artist." (Christo)"Money is like manure. It is good only if you spread it around; only if it helps you do what you want to do." (Jeanne-Claude)
