When Ken Patterson dies unexpectedly, his wife and children struggle to get through the holidays. No one reads the Christmas story-that was something he'd always done, and it's just too hard. Teenaged Melody can no longer sing in the choir with the joy of the Hallelujah. The only song in her heart is filled with melancholy. Melody's mother, Judy, worries when her youngest's moodiness and gloom persist, but is relieved when the girl meets someone special and finally seems to enjoy life again.
