Christmas in Savannah

For almost fifteen years, I was doing fine.

Living my life, enjoying a successful pro tennis career, meeting all my goals. To include the one about never returning to Savannah, Georgia, the city that broke me more than once.

Yet there I was, limping down I-95 in my best friend, my forest-green Jeep Cherokee named Oscar, all because the rules changed and if I wanted any chance at playing in the major tennis Open circuit, I had to play in the Savannah tournament.

My plan? Stay hyper-focused on my game and place (or win) so I could play the matches I really wanted to play.

Reality? A lifelong friend whose open arms are a balm to my soul; an insanely handsome firefighter who feels immediately familiar; a storm that delays the tournament and thus my extrication from this city; and, dare I say, an ignition of my love for America's Most Charming City.

Thirteen years ago, I experienced the cruelest twist of fate I could never have imagined.

Now? I've done all my work. My faith and my therapist say so. Will it hold up? I just want to make it through this trip to Savannah with my head down and my name in the ring.

But of course, best laid plans are never quite so simple...
