Offers a guide for members of any faith tradition who want to move beyond the rhetoric of interfaith dialogue and into the demanding yet richly rewarding work of developing new understandings of the religious other-and of one's own tradition.
The book reads like a breath of fresh air. Sara Lee and Mary Boys do something that many seem to shy way from today. They examine the conflict in history between Christianity and Judaism and learn profound truths about each other's religions and gain a deeper understanding of their individual lives and the friendship they share from the examination. People on the political right, particularly the religious right, would love to see the conflict that the authors write about go away. There seems to be a strong attempt by people like Dennis Prager, David Brogg, Michael Medved, Rabbi G. Dalin and many others to not only ignore history but to rewrite it and minimize (and even eliminate) the significant topic of Christian anti-Semitism in the revision. A pastor once said to me "Christian grace can come real cheap." Why make members of the dominant religion of the Western world feel uncomfortable about stains in their history? Christian Zionists love the Jewish people. They have become the State of Israel's strongest supporters. Why impede American Jews and Christian Zionists from becoming closer political allies and friends by raising an unpleasant subject? Born-again fundamentalist Christians stake for them selves exclusive claim to salvation in the "world to come". Isn't it easy to justify or actually believe in "American-Exceptionalism" as a basis to an agressive US foreign policy if the ugly side of fundamentalist Christianity's inherent chauvinism never manifests itself in history? The authors indicate that a search for historical truth (rather than merely cherry picking past facts to validate ones' political ideology) can bring meaning to ones' life. It can lead, as the authors demonstrate, not only to tolerance but to understanding and genuine equality.
