Raintree Steck-Vaughn's "Discovering Religions" series is written for upper elementary to middle school students seeking information on their own or another belief system. Origins and evolution of the faiths are punctuated by verses taken from each religion's holy book and "quick guide" tables to basic information (who, what, where, when, interesting fact). Highly illustrated in the style of "Eyewitness" books, these have somewhat more information mixed among the photographs. Christianity includes basic hymns and scriptures important to the history of the religion, but stops short of addressing "modern" Christianity, instead focusing on choirs of robed children, stained glass and cathedrals popular at the beginning of the 20th century. Perhaps photos of "everyday" worshippers aren't interesting enough to include next to statements that they do, indeed, exist. Overall, the series covers a broad array of topics, but still falls short of being truly inclusive of modern believers.
