Ignore the Above: This Is Now Dated, but Remains a Classic

The essays in this book were written over twenty years ago by theologians who are now retired and, in some cases, deceased, but who, by any reckoning constitute some of the leading American theological voices of the late 20th century. The age of the text means that the essays lack engagement with many of the more recent trends in theological reflection (on both the left and the right) since that time, but they remain incredibly helpful in two respects. First, each essay does an excellent job of sketching the historical development of the doctrine with which it is concerned from the patristic period through the Enlightenment. Second, each goes on to describe the challenges that have faced Christians in their attempts to maintain the credibility of the doctrine in the modern period, outlining the major options followed and making some modest recommendations about future prospects.
