Christian Osswald was born on March 12, 1834, in Edingen, Baden-Wurtemburg, Germany, the eldest son of John M. and Katrina (Getter) Osswald. Raised in a household steeped in craft, tradition, and faith, he learned the value of diligence from his father's woodworking and the artistry of his mother's embroidery.
From an early age, Christian displayed a love of learning, history, and literature. Apprenticed as a baker in Germany, he honed his craft with care and dedication, laying the foundation for a lifetime of excellence. At eighteen, he crossed the Atlantic aboard the Mathilde, arriving in America to pursue opportunity, resilience, and purpose.
Settling first in Utica and Milwaukee, Christian refined his skills as a brewer and baker before moving to Wausau, Wisconsin, where he established a bakery that became a cornerstone of the community. Alongside his beloved wife, Elizabeth Dresel, he raised twelve children, nurturing them with the same principles of faith, discipline, and integrity that guided his life.
Christian's legacy extended beyond commerce: he served as alderman, participated in fraternal organizations, mentored apprentices, and supported philanthropic initiatives. Through challenges, triumphs, and the passing of time, he built a life that blended family devotion, entrepreneurial excellence, and community service, leaving an enduring impact that continues to inspire generations.
