Book Overview

In a world of spiritual options, people constantly tell us what to believe. Yet, while we hear these pleas, we're already functioning with existing beliefs-even if they are beliefs by default. So how... This description may be from another edition of this product.

Why do you believe what you believe?

I, like at least one other reviewer, knows Mark and have had the opportunity to work with him up close and personal. I have to say this is a book I would value and recommend even if we had never met. I grew up as an atheist and didn't come across very many Christians who thought critically about what they believed. As I have gotten older I have observed that this is pretty true across the population. All have a faith, belief, worldview of some kind which they have adopted by influence or other means without much consideration for the truthfulness or evidence of the belief system. Mark does not answer or even attempt to analyze and answer all of the competing belief systems that are available but rather gives some basic tools to be applied by the individual to their belief system whether they are a Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim or something else. Someone once said an untested faith is not worth having. That is true. "Choosing Your Faith" provides simple basic tools with clear understandable descriptions of them. It is a book well worth reading.

A book meant to be given away

Bibles are fun to give away, and this translation from the NLT is meant to be given to those who are not yet Christians. The notes throughout the paperback by Mittelberg are helpful to direct a person on the path to the cross. It's cheap enough to buy a bunch and give them away, though it is only the New Testament. But what a great place to start! The only issue is that the print is 8 or 9 point--a little small for tired eyes--but that's what happens when you add notes and try to keep the price down. Overall, a worthwhile investment to give away to those whom you share the faith.

Spiritually Seeking?

If you are spiritually seeking, now is the time to pick up a copy of Mark Mittelberg's newest book. It reads like this generation thinks. We question everything, right? So why not our faith? I got the privilege of hearing Mark speak to a group of spiritual seekers about his new book before I got to read it. When I finally sat down to read it I was not surprised that it was well written with some great points. Like: "So, if the Hindu enters the room with [Richard] Dawkins and [Bill] O'Reilly, then no god/God now has to pull off a feat of simultaneity: not existing at all (the atheist perspective); existing as the personal, creator God (in Christian terms); and existing as the impersonal All (the Hindu concept). All three, all at once. And I won't even try to explain what happens when a Scientologist enters the room!" (excerpt from Ch. 2) Feeling intimidated? Why not pick up a copy and choose for yourself.

A Great Giveaway Bible for the Seeker/Skeptic

I read through all the supplemental articles/notes in this New Testament to see if it would be helpful for our church. I found it very well written - especially for people who are spiritually curious/seeking and/or skeptics. The articles are placed in strategic locations throughout this NT to help highlight a common question regarding a barrier to faith, deal with a cultural misperception or dive more deeply into a biblical truth. Mittelberg writes in a style that feels more like someone is talking with you on a walk rather than a professor in a lecture hall. This does not minimize the logic or the quality of the content - it is simply the style in in which it is written. I could relate to it. The articles are intelligent, biblically grounded and clear. Yet, keeping his intended reader in mind, he does not use heady or insider language. As a result, it is very accessible, especially for those who do not come from the same spiritual background. I already put my order in for several cases to have available for people who may be coming to Easter with these types of concerns/questions. This is a great bible - combining access to timeless biblical truths (the NT) with thoughtful discussion/commentary for the seeker/skeptic - designed to overcome the obstacles people have as they journey towards Jesus.

Choosing Your Faith - Add This One To Your Library Now!

Just when I thought we didn't need another book on comparative faith systems and Christian apologetics, here comes Mark Mittelberg and "Choosing Your Faith." I'm pumped! This is truly the book we needed to bridge the intellectual scholarship of apologists such as Craig, Geisler, and Habermas with the postmodern seeker looking for genuine connection. This is apologetics with authentic heart! This is experiential worldview application, rather than mere truth and logic. I heartily congratulate Mark on a fantastic book - I read it earlier this week and already built some of the principles into a college "Comparative Worldviews" class I taught last night. Even if you library is packed with the best in Christian apologetics and Christian worldview, add just one more - "Choosing Your Faith" by Mark Mittelberg! Randall Niles
