Ok, I'll admit I root for the underdog (speaking of "dog",what was that mystery meat in Fuchow anyway ?) and that I over-identified with the sidekick girlfriend with a root canal and food fetish, both in process throughout the caper. That plus being delighted to read a "find" from a small publisher really biased me in favor of this book in the very first pages. I loved it!
