The first Protestant missionaries arrived in China more than 200 years ago with no manual or guidelines to help them in their efforts. They were not well-received by the Chinese and endured rejection, persecution, arrest, and in many cases, death. After many challenges and setbacks, the missionaries were determined to not allow the next generation of believers to experience the same difficulties. So, in the 1890s, several of these pioneer missionaries met together in Shanghai and compiled this missions handbook. In the years following the 1949 Communist Revolution, this handbook was lost. All of the foreign missionaries were kicked out of China and the handbook sat on a dusty shelf with no use in a land without missionaries. Eventually, it was lost to the annals of history and made seemingly obsolete by the plethora of training materials available today by modern-day mission organisations. It seemed as if no human eyes would ever see the pages of this old handbook again--until now! Today, there is a new generation of missionaries in China and they have learned that this China Mission Handbook is just as applicable today as it was over 100 years ago.
