China Briefing 1991

Covering an 18-month span, this latest edition of China Briefing assesses the aftermath of the 1989 Tiananmen tragedy and its continuing impact on China's domestic and foreign policies. The book opens with an exploration of the legitimacy crisis currently engulfing the Chinese Communist state. A review of the Chinese economy concludes that although it is healthier in 1991 than in 1990, the post-Tiananmen political enviroment does not augur well - in the long run - for economic reform. The chapter on U.S.-China relations demonstrates that the specter of Tiananmen still haunts debate over policy on both sides of the Pacific. Other chapters consider the Chinese military, the media, and population policy in this nation of more than one billion people. A concluding chapter discusses Taiwan and shows how the island's progress since 1989 has presented a sharp contrast to the situation on the mainland. --- from book's back cover
