A guide through the pitfalls, special needs, and unique demands of children's library services. Librarians in school and public libraries, media specialists, and library science instructors will find helpful, cogent advice on collection development programming, collection maintenance, and reevaluation nonprint media, summer programs, publicity, public relations, and much more
Connor's coverage of children's services is comprehensive and beneficial for a Public Librarian or School Librarian. Each chapter moves in a progressive manner. She opens with responsibilities of a Children's librarian, job descriptions, administration of Children's Services and public relations. Each chapter contains a bibliography. I found the information on programming extremely beneficial. It describes a good Children's Librarian and how to plan and evaluate your programs. Also included are helpful sample cost tally sheets, planning worksheets and evaluation forms. All are useful in any library setting that has Children's Programs. There are ideas for types of programs, speakers and performers and even ideas on dealing with the Summer Reading Programs. All of these chapters describe the importance of programming and helpful hints on how to continually evaluate your programs so you can grow with your programs. This is a nice addition to any library that is looking for a Children's Services Handbook. It will offer plenty of information and ideas for any children's Librarian.
