Being an entertainer on a holiday park is one of the best jobs around. You have a guaranteed audience who are all on holiday, and for the most part up for fun. You can make mistakes and it's not the end of the world. You can hone your routines day and night until they are perfect and you are part of a wonderful tradition going all the way back to the hey-day of Butlin's in the 50's, 60's and 70's. The old Entertainments Managers with years and years of experience have all but disappeared and with them so much valuable knowledge. The rise of performers with a background in music and drama is great for the resident shows - but what about the rest of the evening?I started my career in the early eighties with Ladbroke Holidays. Surrounded by so many good professionals - bands, presenters, cabarets, blue-coats and Entertainments Managers, I was right in there amongst it and I soaked up all that knowledge and know how. Advice and help was everywhere. Looking back I can see how lucky I was.One evening in peak season when the venue had closed I was talking to that night's cabaret - Phil Blackmore. Top speciality act, very experienced and a good guy to boot. It was his idea that I write this book, a passing on of routines, games, tips, advice, bits of business and hopefully wisdom too.I hope it is of use.
