Brad and Emily couldn't understand what was wrong with their 8-year-old son, Caleb. He had always been an above average student and did his homework, but that year he was having trouble at school. After the teacher gave an exercise, he asked her to explain it again. He went to her eight times a day for more explanations. Could it be a hearing or comprehension problem? Brad and Emily gave their son a hearing test, and a school counselor gave him a listening test. Caleb had normal hearing, and his comprehension skills were typical of a third-year student. Other facts about their son intrigued the parents. At times, Caleb's behavior seemed almost antisocial. The teacher ate lunch each day with a student, but sometimes Caleb pushed his classmates so he could be close to her. At recess, he put the other kids aside whenever the teacher came to the playground. He would run to her to ask an unimportant question and run away from his colleagues. When the teacher played a game during the break, the boy tried to hold her hand. Caleb's parents had already talked to the teacher three times, but none of the three could identify the problem. The boy, an independent and happy child for the previous two years, now seemed to exhibit meaningless "clingy behavior". He was also fighting much more often with his older sister Hannah, although Emily and Brad thought their son was just going through a passing phase. When the couple came to my "The Marriage You've Always Wanted" seminar and told me about Caleb, they were both worried, wondering if they had a rebellious child on their hands or perhaps a child with psychological problems.
