My Children's Literature class loved this book. Not only is it user-friendly, full of appealing illustrations, and intelligently organized, it also shows how far the study of children's literature has come in the past twenty years. My students praised its use of questions from children coupled with answers from the authors and illustrators themselves. They were also relieved to find the lesson ideas and activities for sharing literature with children. As the instructor of undergraduates who will be teachers one day, I appreciate the text's exploration of reader-response theory and its implications for the teaching of children's literature. I also am grateful for its emphasis on multicultural children's literature. Its frank discussion of censorship led to some lively debates in class. I recommend this book to classroom teachers, homeschooling parents, and college professors. It is a thoughtful and useful resource.
